An Evening with Cedar Bowers and Grant Hayter-Menzies


Cedar Bowers’ debut novel, Astra ,was nominated for the 2021 Scotiabank Prize. The novel traces the life from childhood through middle age of Astra, a woman who grew up on an agricultural commune in British Columbia, through the third-person perspectives of various other figures in her life. Bowers has also published short stories in Joyland, Taddle Creek, and The Malahat Review. With her husband, novelist Michael Christie, and their two children, she divides her time between Galiano Island and Victoria.


Biographer Grant Hayter-Menzies has written 13 books and specializes in extraordinary lives. These include Mrs. Ziegfield: The Public and Private Lives of Billie Burke, Charlotte Greenwood: The Life and Career of Comic Star of Vaudeville, Radio and Film, The Empress and Mrs.Conger, Imperial Masquerade: the Legend of Princess Der Ling, Shadow Woman: The Extraordinary Career of Pauline Benton, and Lillian Carter: A Compassionate Life. Animals feature in Woo: The Monkey Who Inspired Emily Carr, From Stray Dog to World War I Hero, Dorothy Brook and the Fight to Save Cairo’s Lost War Horses. His new book, Muggins:The Life and Afterlife of a Canadian Canine War Hero was published in 2021. He lives in Sidney, British Columbia, with his partner Rudi.
